Hurray for these schools!

Fifteen Triangle schools received recognition on U.S. News & World Report’s 2016 Best High Schools list.

Raleigh Charter High School was the No. 2 North Carolina school on the list released last week, ranking 37th nationally among all schools and 13th nationally among charter schools. Raleigh Charter was one of six local schools that received a “gold medal” for ranking in the top 500 nationally.

The five other Triangle “gold medal” schools are Woods Charter in Chatham County at No. 145, East Chapel Hill High at No. 211, Carrboro High at No. 288, Green Hope High in Cary at No. 336 and Durham School of the Arts at No. 358.

Three area schools were among 2,173 nationally to receive a “silver medal.” Those schools are Franklin Academy in Wake Forest at No. 1,042, City of Medicine Academy in Durham at No. 1,431 and Jordan Matthews High School in Siler City at No. 1.660

Six area schools were among 3,545 nationally to receive a “bronze medal.” Those schools are: East Wake Academy in Zebulon; J.D. Clement Early College in Durham; Johnston College Early College Academy in Smithfield; Princeton High, Wake Early College of Health and Science in Raleigh and Wake STEM Early College in Raleigh.

U.S. News worked with Raleigh-based RTI International to develop this year’s list, which looked at more than 28,000 public U.S. high schools.

Schools were evaluated based on how they performed overall on state exams and whether they performed better than expected based on their student poverty levels. Schools were also evaluated on how well they performed with low-income, black and Hispanic students.

In a change from last year, U.S. News then looked at high school graduation rates. Schools had to have at least a 68-percent graduation rate to get a medal.

Lastly, schools were evaluated on how they prepare students for college using participation and performance data from Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate exams.
